Six Questions with Jota Mombaça
Jota Mombaça's THE SINKING SHIP/PROSPERITY (October 27, 2022–February 11, 2023) was a major solo exhibition at KADIST San Francisco combining large-scale sculpture, sound, and video to explore water's elemental force and what Mombaça calls "the radicality of sinking." The centerpiece, Ghost 0 (2022), comprised 160 feet of cotton submerged in a Venetian lagoon, then dried to reveal the water's sediment pressed into its folds — installed across the gallery on steel armature shaped like whale rib bones. Alongside it, three newly commissioned fabric sculptures made from linen sunk in the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay were resurfaced and installed during the show's run, joined by a video projection and two-channel sound installation. Together, these works created what Mombaça described as a "wordless spectral realm" — a meditation on displacement, environmental racism, the Transatlantic slave trade, and the decolonial possibilities of listening to water.
While working with KADIST, I collaborated with the team to design Six Questions, a pamphlet featuring an interview with Mombaça that accompanied the gallery guide distributed throughout the exhibition. The document gave visitors a more intimate look into the themes behind the work and Mombaça's installation process. I worked alongside Evirgen Özmen, who developed the exhibition's visual identity, with my role focused on the document design and layout of the interview pamphlet. Both the gallery guide and Six Questions were archived and featured on[Contemporary Art Library] as part of the exhibition's full documentation.
